Building Skills for the Culinary Industry

Culinary Arts I is a hands-on Career and Technical Education (CTE) course that introduces students to the principles and practices of the food service and hospitality industry. Students develop foundational culinary skills while learning industry standards for food safety, sanitation, kitchen operations, and professional food preparation.

Working in a commercial-style kitchen environment, students learn through practical application, teamwork, and real-world culinary experiences. The course emphasizes professionalism, responsibility, communication, and workplace readiness while preparing students for advanced culinary training and careers in the hospitality industry.

What Students Will Learn

Preparing for Culinary Arts II and Chef's Training

Culinary Arts I serves as the first course in North Beach's Culinary Arts Program of Study. Students who successfully complete the course may continue into Culinary Arts II / Chef's Training, where they take on advanced culinary projects, leadership responsibilities, and real-world food service experiences.

Together, Culinary Arts I and Culinary Arts II form a state-approved Career and Technical Education pathway that helps prepare students for post-secondary education, apprenticeships, employment, and careers in the culinary and hospitality industries.

Success in the culinary industry depends on collaboration, communication, and accountability. Throughout the course, students work in kitchen teams that mirror the structure of professional food service operations. Students learn to support one another, solve problems, meet deadlines, and produce quality results while maintaining high standards of safety and professionalism.
