Ms. Lauren Schmidt

Where are you from?

I am from Minnetonka, Minnesota where I grew up and went to high school. After college, I lived in New Orleans, LA, Yakima, WA, and now in Pacific Beach!

High school and college experience

My educational background is I received my Bachelors in Microbiology and Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 2014 and my Master of Science in Education from Johns Hopkins University in 2019. During my master’s I focused my study on secondary science instruction.

Years of teaching experience

This year will be my sixth year teaching. I spent two years teaching middle school science in New Orleans, where I also worked as an instructional coach for other science teachers and wrote science curriculum for the charter network. Next, I spent two years teaching middle school science in Union Gap, WA. During this time, I coached an after-school robotics club and led students in a state-wide STEM competition. Last year, I taught sixth grade at Pacific Beach Elementary!

Areas of knowledge

I teach middle school science, which is my favorite because I get to teach all of the disciplines of science including earth and space science, physical science, life science, and engineering. One of my favorite things to teach is coding and robotics especially using Arduino microcontrollers. It is so much fun to see the amazing devices that students design, code, and build themselves.
